This painting was at least two years in the making. Since reading Deathly Hallows, I knew I needed to paint Severus and his patronus. When it was revealed in Deathly Hallows that his patronus is a doe, I shivered and gasped in realization. A doe for Lily, the female mate to Harry's deer patronus, a patronus borne out of the magical connection to his father's protection and his mother's love. Like Harry's patronus, Severus' cherished memories of Lily, her love and acceptance of him at a formative time in his youth, was always there for him, and in this way, her legacy with him transcended death. Despite their shattered relationship later, his idealized vision of Lily carried him through when he became the reluctant hero he is, and in this way, it shows that he forgives her and continues to cherish and love her until the very end.

The devastation of this truth for Severus Snape is a powerful idea to me. I can only hope I conveyed this idea with at leat a portion of the justice it deserves. I wanted to show Severus Snape in a moment of acceptance, recognition, presence, and forgiveness, a moment of peace and serenity, when he is able to wandlessly conjure and channel the protective spirit of his Patronus, a vision of Lily.

This is my song to Severus Snape. His struggles were so life-altering, unpeaceful, and fraught, and I wanted him to have a measure of peace. Because in the end, he was a brave man, and tragically, did not get to enjoy a life of freedom without a master, beyond the trauma of war and regretful life choices.

This Severus was also inspired by darkirony's vision of Severus Snape, one who was hardened by the war, but also had the opportunity to live beyond it, and carry on.

I played with different techniques and ways of conveying the magic of the doe Patronus. It is one of those things that defy the limitations of the visual medium, or the limitations of my creativity. I tried to convey the weightlessness of it, the organic and yet supernatural nature of it, the force of magic pushing matter and particles around in space, the way his hair and robes sways from the impact of it. And the otherworldliness of a Patronus, which seems almost sentient and yet completely organic and magical and formed from the sheer will of the wizard who casts it. And yet, the Patronus is embued with qualities of protection, born from the happiest, most positive memories the caster can call upon.

While I originally envisioned this piece to take place in the dark forest before he has the Patronus lead Harry to the lake, I wanted to place Severus in a more lighted, warmer place. In the forest, where, even alone, he is never truly alone.

I hope you enjoy this piece. Unlike my previous paintings, I utilized layers quite a bit, but still, everything is still completely painted, with no use of Photoshop blending modes.

Saw your "Luna and the Squid" and "Always" at LB Comicon.  It was pretty busy so thanks for taking the time to talk about some of your techniques.  Your art is beautiful and amazing, the deer in "Always" has a completely magical quality to it.  Keep up the fantastic work!

I agree with you whole heartedly, Severus was so put-up by the fates, his one and only true love taken from him and his life not his own throughout. But he was a brave and strong person, for at any time he could have backed away or chosen a different path, but he never did. He did what he could to continue Lily's love and to protect and defend what could have been his own child, had things been slightly different. A great piece. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, I don't know what to say about this piece. I've never seen Severus' face with this expression, this emotion showing on it before. He's not just brooding or anguished. Anyway, I guess I don't need to say anything because everything you explain in the description you realise in your painting. It's wonderful!

The patronus looks like light, but has such a presence, I want to reach out and touch it. (There are probably rules against touching other people's patronus' though. And if I tried to touch Snape's I don't think I'd escape lightly!)

I don't know if you've come across ls269*'s recently finished fan fiction [link] about Severus? Thought I'd share it with you in case you might like it
